A collection of photographic collages by Pamela Au
Sugar Cane
This represents an era in the history of the Hawaiian Culture. The collage was inspired by a song written by my husband entitled Sugar Cane. The song speaks about a time of change for the Hawaiian people.
The sugar cane industry altered the way the land was cultivated and brought a change in the lifestyle of the Hawaiian people. Introduced in the 1830’s, the sugar industry brought new ways, new people and new diseases to the once isolated Hawaiians. Native Hawaiians did not take kindly to the labor of a plantation worker. Eventually the native population began to decline because of the change of lifestyle and disease. This collage shows how something that once was is no longer; represented here by the ruins of the old sugar cane mill.
