A collection of photographic collages by Pamela Au
Lighthouse
Makapu’u is Hawaiian for bulging eye, which according to Hawaiian legend, Makapu`u was a supernatural being who, after arriving from Tahiti, took up residence on the eastern point of Oahu now bearing her name. This being's defining feature was her set of eight bright eyes, hence the name Makapu’u.
Travelers drew near the point and saw the woman Makapu'u sitting on the beach. Most were frightened when they saw the many eyes of this supernatural being.
The lighthouse now stands on this very same point. It has been a beacon for many ships and airplanes.
With these collages I tried to capture the spirit of Makapu’u and the magic she brought with her.
