Kukaniloko
One of the most sacred sites in central Oahu, Kukaniloko was one of two sites used for the birth of royalty in Hawaii. Kukaniloko means “To anchor the cry from within.” It was believed that those who gave birth here would do so with less or no pain.
Upon entering the site you are greeted by two large boulders representing the King and Queen. Aligned behind them are the stone guards 18 on each side of the King and Queen boulders. These 36 guards represent the chiefs who witnessed the births. Surrounded by a grove of palm trees are the birthing rocks. With this collage I have put together the king and queen boulders with the sacred rocks and added the rainbow to signify the connection from heaven to earth. The ancient Hawaiians believed this area was blessed with mana (spiritual energy) and a child born here would be honored. I have tried to capture the essence of this sacred place with this collage.
